Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan Sault Ste. Marie is another unique city that stands out from other border towns, it shares the named with its Canadian sister. The cities used to be one before being divided in The War of 1812, the immediate causes for the war were a series of economic sanctions taken by the British and French against the US as part of the Napoleonic Wars and American outrage at the British. The dividing line was drawn along the St. Mary River, but both are still connected by the International Bridge, which gives locals and tourist alike the facility to move between the two towns to explore what’s around them. When visiting the Michigan city, you can’t pass up the opportunity to take a dive in one of the two Great Lakes that surrounds this small city, whether it be Lake Superior or Lake Michigan.
